A few years back a friend was in dire need of a second automobile to accommodate his growing family, and he began spreading the word within our small community of his necessity for a good used car. With no specific idea of what make or model could be afforded on a tight budget the chance of finding a decent used auto was questionable at best, but my friend approached the car search with the hope and enthusiasm of a teenager.Rather quickly, a flood of potential used car sellers began contacting my friend to make their pitches on why he should consider their automobile as the solution to his pressing dilemma. As he waded through a seemingly endless string of damaged and dying junkers it started to become evident that a quality used car may be beyond the constraints of budget concerns. One evening an elderly woman telephoned my friend to inquire if he was interested in looking at her 8 year-old Lincoln Town Car. While he never really had any preconceived notions on what type of automobile he was searching for, an upscale car like this had to have serious issues to be within his price range. Regardless of his concerns the next day he met with the woman and took the car for a test drive, pleasantly surprised at what outstanding condition the car was in. The Lincoln had low mileage, new tires and a complete service record to go along with a perfect body and new looking interior. After discussing price there was no negotiation necessary to conclude the purchase, and my friend bought the automobile for $2,000 less than Blue Book Value. While the rest of his family shared the new minivan my friend used the Lincoln as his exclusive personal vehicle. The car was absolutely wonderful - spacious, comfortable and mechanically trouble free but there was an issue that didn't present itself until after he owned the vehicle for several months. My friend soon discovered that the car was literally too nice for him, and because of this he couldn't use the vehicle to engage in the activities he enjoyed for fear of damaging the car. Hunting and fishing were an integral part of my friend's existence, but no one in their right mind would stuff the trunk of a Lincoln with 30 pounds of freshly caught Catfish or a dead deer. Soon it became obvious that while the auto was amazing in every way it had to go in favor of one that fit his lifestyle. The Lincoln is sold now and at last check my friend was cruising down the road in a 15 year-old SUV with 3 different colors on the body and a cracked rear window - wearing a smile that is priceless.
